A 2-Day Workshop on Introduction to REBT and CBT

Two days’ workshop was held at Mynd institute on the 15th and 16th November 2025 as a part of the continuous education program for the counselors, interns and mental health professionals (MHP). The workshop was on Introduction to REBT (Rationale emotive therapy) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Half a day workshops were conducted by Dr. Rijusmita Sarma; Counselling Psychologist trained in primary and advanced REBT from AEI New York, in Exposure therapy for Anxiety-Disorders from Beck Institute, Philadelphia and in CBT from Morphic Minds and also trained in Grief Therapy by David Kesslar.
The participants were all post graduates in Psychology working in various institutes providing mental health care and services. The number of participants were seven.
On the first day the objectives of the workshop were to educate the participants about the history, philosophy, principles and ABC model of REBT; to discuss about the rational and irrational beliefs, types of irrational beliefs and healthier counterparts; along with the contents of irrational beliefs. Detailed discussion of the ABC model along with the extended model of ABCDE was carried out with multiple scenarios based on real events in narrative, didactic mode and role modeling as well.
On the 2nd day of the workshop the objectives were basic concepts of CBT; how it evolved; in what philosophy is it based on, the basic principles of CBT, the cognitive models, the different levels of cognition, cognitive distortions, cognitive conceptualization and cognitive restructuring. Aaron Beck’s concept was discussed in detail with his early studies and experiments. The intervention strategies were discussed with real cases brought in, by the participants.
Overall, the workshop was a success in providing scientific insight with deep-rooted knowledge on REBT and CBT to the emerging professionals and helped in better understanding the basic concepts of both therapies with practical and theoretical knowledge while the session structure heightened the reliability of the learnings and understanding of an actual therapeutic set up.
